Understanding Health Behaviors in Florida

Florida Health Behaviors

Health Behaviors in Florida

How do we begin to understand health behaviors in Florida? Health behaviors come from many attributes from where we live to economic status. We all want to live healthy here in Florida but where are the healthiest areas within the state to live?  The Tampa Bay area located on the Westcoast of Florida has about 350,000 (2019) people living in it.  If you include Saint Petersburg and Clearwater the Tampa Bay area is the 4th largest metropolitan area in the Southeast.  Source – www.worldpopulationreview.com

Recently the County Health Rankings Report for 2019 came out explaining that effects of how well we live and how long we live are contributed to where we live. This study showed that the Tampa Bay area ranks in the top 25 out of 67 counties in the state.

These rankings are used by communities to raise support for local health improvement programs, health care providers, Politician support and local community organizations to name a few.  Contributing factors being considered are health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment.

Types of Health Behaviors

These types of behaviors are usually looked as a risk assessment that can lead to illness or impede your recovery.  Activities such as a poor diet, little to no exercise, smoking tobacco, abusing alcohol and drugs, and high risk sexual activity all can raise your risk factors.

  • Diet – If your diet is low in nutrients but have high fat, sodium, and calories you might be leading yourself towards major health issues such as heart disease.
  • Exercise – Some of the leading researches in health recommend that you should have 10k steps a day. How many steps do you do a day?  With little to no physical activity your risk factors go way up.
  • Tobacco – We all have seen the warnings about health issues with smoking.  One ad comes to mind about a cheer leader that is now older has to speak with a hole in her throat.  The risks of smoking are very high which is why most insurance carriers will ask when getting a new policy.
  • Alcohol and Drugs – Tobacco really falls under this group in my opinion.  This risk factor covers substance abuse, which includes alcohol, illicit drugs and even prescription drugs.  The risks factors are based on usage.  Drinking a bottle of bourbon in one night reflects far more risk than someone drinking a glass of wine with dinner.
  • Sexual Activity – Not protecting yourself from a virus such as HIV/AIDS among others is very risky.  Although not every case is considered a death sentence as it once was. However, it still ranks up there as a high risk activity.

Healthcare Politics

Watch the news, there is a never ending debate over access to care and the social and economic factors.  So let’s talk about the most over looked factor by the public, which are health behaviors. In many ways, people don’t like looking at themselves as the problem.  Sometimes it’s just easier to point the finger at the President, Congress, Big Health, or even at your own local physician.

The federal government has been interjecting policies that affect your local care and access to care for years.  Does someone in D.C. know more about your health and need then your local official and physician?  I don’t think so.  The problem is that on the federal level there is always a push for comprehensive reform.  This is just another way of saying one size fits all, which doesn’t work.  They can demand access but time-over-time they write bills that over promise and under deliver.

Location Helps

Location is everything in Real Estate and it affects our behaviors from state to state.  We here in Florida get more exposure to the sun than most of the country, which gives us a higher risk factor of getting skin cancer. Florida also has a host of danger with its location.  While out at a park or even golfing you might run across an Alligator or one of many of Florida’s deadly snakes.

If you live near good paying jobs and have access to multiple grocery stores you are more likely to have a diet that includes a verity of fresh vegetables.  At the same time, your risk factors go up if you live near powerlines or a chemical plant.  Location also reflects access to care as someone living in a metro area will have more choices then a rancher living in a rural area.

Summary

Florida that has many risk factors also brings a quality of life, which is probably why so many seniors move to the state to retire.  Health behaviors, clinical care, social and economic factors and physical environment all contribute to our health and its care. However, no one can care more about your health than you.  No matter where you live, be proactive with your health.  Start small by eating a balanced diet and doing some exercise.  Taking a short walk a day will take you a long ways!

Bananas For Bananas

Bananas Origins

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits in the world. History authorities say that they originated in Southeast Asia. However, today they are grown in most tropical areas like Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Most developing countries have identified the banana as a staple to their diet, only about 20% of them are exported to the global market.

Bananas and Health

Bananas have lots of Potassium, Tyrosine, Vitamin B-6, Vitamin C and Iron.  Another plus is that bananas are high in Fiber, both soluble and insoluble.  Breakfast time is a great time to eat a bananas due to its soluble fiber, which can help slow down digestion thus keeping you full until your next meal.

Bananas and Carbs

Bananas have a good amount of carbohydrates “Carbs” that can raise your blood sugar levels. In fact, most low carb diets suggest that you stay away from bananas and even plantains. So bananas and carbs go hand in hand. Bananas actually transforms as it ripens.  A green unripe banana is filled with starch. As it ripens it turns to sugar, which means carbs. As much as 90% of the calories in a banana come from carbs.

We always hear about bananas and its potassium but what about the iron it offers?  Because they are high in iron content, bananas can help fight iron deficiency anaemia.

Athletes use up lots of energy when working out and competing.  To help improve their performance they require good nutrition.  Bananas become a great post workout snack for athletes with only about 105 calories per medium size banana.

“After a workout, you definitely have to have a protein shake.  I drink my six-pound whey protein all the time, too.  I throw some fruit in there – strawberries, blueberries – with some peanut butter and banana, and it gives you all the recovery you need from a hard day of lifting and running.”

–Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski

Bananas and Diabetes

Before going bananas for bananas you should have your blood sugar levels checked.  Many American’s don’t know their blood levels until they see signs of diabetes.

Diabetes occurs when your blood sugar, also called blood glucose, is too high.  This is how your body creates energy after eating food.  With diabetes your body is unable to use insulin as intended or does not have the ability to produce it at all.   So it’s important to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to keep your blood sugar levels in the correct range.  It’s important to visit your doctor to find out where you are and head-off any diabetes related complications.

So why is this all important when talking about bananas?  Because bananas are so popular, many people eat them without knowing their overall effects to the body.  This is even more important if you have diabetes and doesn’t even know it.  Per WebMD.com, nearly 3 in 10 Americans have diabetes and don’t even know it.  Unfortunate, type 2 diabetes can develop very slowly.  So if you find your cuts and scrapes healing slowly, feeling more run down or fatigue then normal, or experiencing blurred vision you might want to get checked out.

Summary

Bananas are in fact very good for you and your diet within reason.  Bananas come in their own biodegradable wrapper, which makes them very portable. How can you not like bananas?

Healthy Heart Tips

Healthy Heart

How long would it take for you to travel 60,000 miles?  Believe it or not, your body has about 60,000 miles of blood vessels.  Your blood vessels are like train tracks that transports cells, oxygen and nutrients from your head to your toes.  You’re heart acts as Grand Central Station keeping everything on time.

As we get older we tend to get more complacent with our body image and focus on other things like picking up the kids on time or working extra hours to get a promotion.

It’s important to realize that a healthy heart doesn’t come without work. With that in mind, try and add in some exercise with your schedule. This isn’t always so easy if you work in an office. Even though you work at a desk doesn’t mean you can’t stand up once an hour and work.

Below are 3 healthy heart tips to get you started:

Dental Health

I know what you’re thinking, you hate the dentist.  Let’s face it, there are very few people that like going to the dentist.  Having good dental health really has a big impact on if you have a health heart or not.  For example, did you know that periodontal (gum) disease is associated with increased risk of developing heart disease?  What happens is that nasty bacterial infections can find its way into the blood stream and cause issues for your heart valves.  This can lead to a heart attack or even stroke.

TIP: First and foremost, brush your teeth at least twice a day in addition to a nightly flossing and visit your dentist regularly. It’s really that easy.

Sleep

Believe it or not, sleep is very important to keeping a healthy heart.  As we age we actually sleep less. On the average most adults need a good 7 hours of sleep a night, which few people can do.  A point that is often overlooked are the risks of developing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or even obesity. With this in mind, you may end up with heart disease. To clarify, sleep is just as important as eating dinner or drinking water for a healthy heart.

TIP: It’s important to get to bed around the same time each night. Put together a sleep schedule and follow it the best you can. As a result, you’ll eventually turn that schedule into a routine. Make your bedroom as cool and comfortable as possible. Another thing to keep in mind is to avoid your cell, tablet, laptop around bed time. Many professionals can’t put down their tech devices, which may have you up all night due to the blue light effect. If you can’t resist, go out and purchase a blue light filter. Last but not least, don’t eat or drink right before bed, which includes alcohol.

Smoking

As seen on TV, smoking kills.  In addition to many smoking side effects, you might end up with breathing issues or worst, lung cancer.  While most people are focused on the effects of the lungs, the heart is often over looked.  As a result, many people may find themselves at high risks of a heart attack.  As an example, WEBMD says that 1 out of 5 deaths from heart disease are directly related to smoking.  At the same time if you’re women that takes birth control pills the odds increase.  With smoking it can raise your blood pressure, create blood clots and might reduce the oxygen that your heart gets.
